BREEDING FOR THE LONGTAILS - saddle hackle

One cannot select a phenotype (the way the bird looks) for long hackle from the hen because she does not display the lengths as the males do in these feathers. One can, however, select those with fullest and somewhat longer saddles.
The most important aspect of achieving long saddles is to choose a cock that displays this and then carefully breed him to his daughters and granddaughters, thereby fixing the genotype in the line. One problem, however, is the finding of a good phenotype to work with!

Many lines of Phoenix have lost the saddle length and once lost, this aspect is probably lost for good in the line. Try to start out with good genetic lines for feathering. Form can be added, but one would have to start selecting now and the selection must be carried out perhaps for the 100 to 200 years to reestablish "from scratch". This hen above is of to-die-for form and feathering.
