One cannot select a phenotype (the way the bird looks)
for long hackle from the hen because she does not display the lengths as
the males do in these feathers. One can, however, select those with fullest
and somewhat longer saddles.
The most important aspect of achieving long saddles is
to choose a cock that displays this and then carefully breed him to his
daughters and granddaughters, thereby fixing the genotype in the line. One
problem, however, is the finding of a good phenotype to work with!
