Longtail Fowl of the World

WELCOME TO LONGTAIL FOWL OF THE WORLD
New discoveries in the world of Longtail!!! Click here for more information on this fly-tying race of poultry! This particular specimen shows the clear distinction between saddle and main tail growth. This breed, having been developed within the last 60 - 70 years, sheds a lot of light on the particulars of longtailed-ness. Please read more about the breeding of Longtails under the links BREEDING LONGTAIL and under ONAGADORI in the left frame.
- please click here for FRAMES EDITION if you have arrived here by the Poultry Ring-or the FEATHER SITE Onagadori page
Raising Longtail Ornamental Fowl is an extremely rewarding hobby! Watching one of these rare long-tailed birds moving through the garden is like witnessing an animal of fables and legends, like beholding a rare flower walking.

We are also the world-contact pages for the Longtail Fowl within the Asian Gamefowl Society. Neither this website nor the Asian Gamefowl Society are in support of the gaming (fighting) of birds.
This web site is devoted to all Longtail Fowl breeds and is affiliated with the ASIAN GAMEFOWL SOCIETY as well as with the German PHOENIX & ONAGADORI SOCIETY. The breeds chosen here are true Longtails by my opinion and I am solely responsible for the opinions and information expressed on these pages. Sumatra and Cubalaya have not been included because even though these two breeds have full tails, they are not longer than, say, a feather-rich Leghorn. The breeds I have chosen under the longtails are: Onagadori, Yokohama, Phoenix, Minohiki, Totenko, Ohiki, Bantam Phoenix and Yokohamas and Shokoku.
If you know of any other true Longtail Fowl, PLEASE send in images and descriptions, as there are still many yet unpublished breeds that would fit into this category. After many years of being involved in the breeding of Onagadori, Yokohama and Phoenix breeds in Europe, I have travelled extensively in Europe and have made trips to America in the search of the Longtails. I have not been to Japan. Not yet. I began these web pages as a desire to share information with others breeders, information about the preservation and breeding of these jewels of aviculture.

PLEASE NOTE: All texts and illustrations are under copyright unless otherwise stated.
Permission will be gladly given for the promotion of these beautiful birds, but permission MUST BE REQUESTED. If there are images used on this website that are not to be used, please contact me, as I have received a few images from sources that I do not know if a copyright exists.
I feel certain that these pages are now the world's most extensive references on the Onagadori and the Longtails in general. More than 120 years of research and extensive trips to Japan are involved in this information. I am indebted to my friends, Knut Roeder of Germany, for his historical connection to the Japanese breeders (if you are interested in these birds please contact him, not me), and to Brian Reeder of the USA for his years-long experience in breeding the longtails.
All of the photographs I have taken personally of the breed Minohiki are from Knut Roeder's birds. He is not selling eggs or birds of these two breeds at the moment, but should within a few years. Start saving. They won't be cheap. Take out second morgage!

The Longtails have been historically connected with Gamefowl but this point is of dispute in modern circles. The Minohiki is of definite Shamoid origin, and the Shokoku was a "Temple Fighter" in ancient times in Japan, and yet to consider the Onagadori or Ohiki of the Gamefowl category seems to carry little weight today. For the historical aspect, however, I have gladly associated my work in these web pages with those of the rapidly growing and progressive ASIAN GAMEFOWL SOCIETY, for which I am now the world contact person for the Longtails . If you have questions about these remarkable birds that are not answered in these pages, please feel free to inquire directly to me. Or if you would wish to simple chat about them! E-mail me casarocca@cotton.com.
An international society for the preservation of the Longtail Fowl, both of previous and recent imports from Japanese, is in the making. Purely European breeds such as the Yokohama and the Phoenix are not to be included. In this society only the Japanese pure breed would be included, as far as my knowledge goes.
For this reason I am recommending the ASIAN GAMEFOWL SOCIETY or the up and coming NALFA (North American Longtail Fowl Association)
as the roof organisation for all our Longtail breeds, direct or indirectly of Japanese origin - at least until we can form an international society for all Longtail Breeds. The Asian Gamefowl Society does not promote gaming - fighting - of birds. It is only an organisation for the preservation of Gamefowl breeds, which can be very tame and almost affectionate to their owners.
