The word "Shamo" is a description for fighter in Japanese, and not indicative of one particular breed. The O-Shamo and the Ko-Shamo are completely different breeds, whereas the Chu-Shamo and the O-Shamo are exactly the same breed, but two different weight categories. The honouring of these two weight categories was begun for the first time in Italy in 2000, creating two equally important sizes at the shows. Up until then, only the largest Shamo was preferred by judges, even though the Chu weight class has many more elegant and more typical animals amoung them.
